Nasalized Vowel Detection Based on a Threshold of an Acoustic Parameter

چکیده
In this paper, a threshold based approach using an acoustic parameter derived from the modified group delay function is presented for the detection of nasalized vowels from the mixture of oral and nasalized vowels of normal speakers. It is shown through acoustic analysis on the modified group delay spectrum that during the event of nasalization additional formants (resonances) at various frequency locations are introduced. Also, it is found that the introduction of a new formant in low frequency region around 250Hz remains consistent irrespective of female or male speakers. By verifying this fact on the band-limited modified group delay spectrum that is capable of resolving two closely spaced formants, an acoustic parameter RMGD is formed. Utilizing RMGD, the idea of detection of nasalized and oral vowels is formulated as a two-class problem and solved based on a threshold based scheme .Simulation results on TIMIT database show that the proposed method detect nasalized vowel from the mixture of oral and nasalized vowel with 92% average accuracy.

Hidden Markov Model-based approach for nasalized vowels recognition in spontaneous speech
In this study, oral and nasalized vowels were analysed based on Hungarian spontaneous speech corpus. Although such results are generally based on analyses of isolated, read-aloud sentences, the authors suggested it is questionable that they are also true of spontaneous types of speech. There is a lack of agreement in the literature as to which measurable acoustic parameters correlate of nasalit...
متن کاملVowel Nasalization in American English: Acoustic Variability Due to Phonetic Context
This study quantifies acoustic variation of vowel nasalization arising from phonetic context in American English with an emphasis on carryover contexts. While qualitative articulatory trajectories and phonetic descriptions suggest that a vowel is nasalized in carryover contexts, few acoustic studies have examined this issue. Our acoustic analyses investigate the vowel /i/ and show that: (1) a v...
متن کاملAcoustic and Perceptual Similarity in Coarticulatorily Nasalized Vowels
This study investigates the acoustic and perceptual consequences of nasal coarticulation in American English. Nasalized (coarticulated) vowels were found to be closer in the F1-F2 acoustic vowel space than corresponding oral (non-coarticulated) vowels, indicating that contrast is reduced in the nasal vowel space, relative to the oral vowel space. With respect to perception, listeners are, perha...

Nasalized veolar consonant [g] in continuous Japanese is often observed in some dialect and is said to decrease in frequency year by year. This paper deals with acoustic and perceptual analysis of this phenomenon. Test materials used in this experiment are read version of Japanese short sentences by NHK’s (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) professional announcers. Each sentence includes at least ...
متن کاملStudy of Acoustic Properties of Nasal and Nonnasal Vowels in Temporal Domain
There has been considerable amount of work done in exploring the acoustic correlates of nasalized and non-nasalized vowels in the frequency domain. Nasalized vowels are characterized by the presence of extra pole-zero pairs near the first formant region and across the spectrum. Several other automatically extractable acoustic features have been proposed by researchers across the globe. This are...
